I love SitSpots!
SitSpots are traditionally used as a management system. They work perfectly for those of us who may not have a large area rug. The SitSpots help kids know where to sit or stand.
When I first read about it them on Ms.M's blog, I was intrigued. So, I ordered the sample.
When the free sample apple arrived, I used it to help my class know where to line up for recess. This system has worked perfectly. After months of use, the free SitSpot sample is still holding strong.
A few months later, I decided to purchase more SitSpots. But this time, I had an idea. I wanted the SitSpots to help support my teaching. Often when reading blogs and browsing through Pinterest, I see many engaging lessons using the area rug. Unfortunately, my classroom is not the size of a traditional kindergarten classroom. With SitSpots, I am able to create similar lessons.
I purchased 5 red and 5 yellow SitSpots to mimic our red and yellow counters. I use these to create addition sentences. If I had had these in the beginning of the year, I would have used them to help with substizing and working with the five or ten frame.
But my favorite use for SitSpots is to support Phonological Awareness.
Using three SitSpots of the same color and two footprint spots, my students hop and blend phonemes to produce words orally. This system has worked wonders for my little ones who are struggling to hear and blend sounds into words. First I give them a picture card found here. Then, as a group, we review the sounds for each spot. Finally, the child hops the sound for each spot and says the word when they hop onto the footprints. I can immediately hear their errors if any and correct them.
My kids love this activity. They think we are playing a hopping game! They don't realize that they are learning. But truly they are as we are now able to apply this skill onto print.
Would you like to try SitSpots? Joyce, a kindergarten teacher and the creator of SitSpots, has graciously offered to giveaway a classroom set of 30 SitSpots of your choice. For more details, see below.

These would be awesome.
ReplyDeleteMy students have a problem with personal space. These would help a lot.
ReplyDeleteThis would be great to use with helping to line up! My kids all want to pile on top of one another when it is time to get in line....I say the same thing all the time-take 3 steps back! LOL

I had not heard of these! Would love to have some for designating personal space at read on your own time.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome idea! My kids would love hopping
ReplyDeleteI would also use them for phonemic awareness!
ReplyDeleteI would love to use these during daily 5 read to self & for so many other activities!
ReplyDeleteThese sound great, better than tape on the carpet and much nicer looking.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of these but would love to have them!
ReplyDeleteI saw these at the SoCal Kinder Conference last week and had them in my hand to purchase until I realized that they may not stick to my carpet and that I needed to verify first. I found out that they will stick to the regular carpeting but not the area rug. II have to find a home for the area rug and then I can order. I love the idea of using them for math and phonological awareness. Me?? I'm going to stick (haha get it) to management for awhile. I don't want them to realize that the come off. I have a TK class of 20 and they are a handful!!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a fantastic idea. I would love to use it with my students. Thanks. Belinda
ReplyDeleteThis is great! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI would definitely use them for math. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the giveaway.
Oh, for math! I will have to look more into using these for phonics too. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of using the Sit Spots for jumping from sound to sound to make words. I have some children who could really use this activity. I could also use them for math. Do you know if they stick to a tile floor since our rugs were removed years ago. But I was thinking that if you can write on them, I could write the word wall words on them and place them around the room and have the children jump from word to word as they practice reading them.
ReplyDeleteThey will not stick to tile or straight pile carpet (think Lakeshore type classroom rugs). The carpet needs to be a loop style. The sit spots are the scratchy side of velcro material.
DeleteI want to use them for class management because my students are having a hard time staying in their own space while on the rug. I like the idea of putting either sight words or number sentences on them that kids have to read/work out when they sit down.
ReplyDeleteI would use these to help define personal space, and also for math work!
ReplyDeleteThese would be great for helping my kids line up (our line has to curve, which makes it a little tricky for Kinders), or seating, or math practice (I'm picturing ten "frames").....oh, the possibilities!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to use these for lining up, for my overflow students who don't fit on our 25 square rug, for math and I'll probably find a ton of other ideas!

I'd love to try them as a kinesthetic number line! Great product!

I learned something new today!
ReplyDeleteOh how fun!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to use these for lining up
ReplyDeleteI have never seen these before, I love your ideas for math and reading. I also like the idea for using them to line up. I am sure I could find more ways too.
ReplyDeleteRight now I would use them for my little ones who cannot sit on the carpet because of behavior issues. These spots would give them a space near the carpet so they are still involved, but keep them from distracting the other students.
ReplyDeleteThese look so interesting! :)
ReplyDeleteWould love to win for my special needs kiddos. Useful for math, gross motor, etc.
ReplyDeleteLove your ideas for using these. I, too, don't have room for a large classroom rug.
ReplyDeletei love the idea of using these for blending! my kiddos this year are really struggling with this.
ReplyDeleteI would love these for counters/10 frames. As a special education teacher, my kids need lots of movement, models, etc (all kids do, but mine really need extra). Thank you for offering this giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI love them for phonoloigcal awareness!
ReplyDeleteThese are certainly a great idea. My classroom isn't set up in such a way that I could use these. Really super cool. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas! Would love to win!
ReplyDeleteI would use these to make rows so my students could sit in their own personal space.
ReplyDeleteI could use them for spots to line up or for partners sharing spots! =)

Engaging the mind often means engaging the body- what a great idea for phonological awareness skill building! Thanks for the chance, and the inspiration!

I love the phonemic awareness ideas. I also like the idea of using them for carpet spots. I have a lot of students that like to move around on the carpet to talk to their friends.
ReplyDeleteLOVE these!! Thanks for sharing about them. I had never heard of them before!

Kindergarten Boom Boom
I would use these to organize my students on the carpet so they all stay in their own "bubble space" which they all have such a hard time doing! These are awesome!
ReplyDeleteThis would be a great management tool...plus a great way to use math concepts/phonemic awareness!
ReplyDeleteI am a reading specialist and I would love to use these for phonological awareness!!!
ReplyDeleteHow awesome! I would love something like this in my tiny classroom. :)
ReplyDeleteI already use velcro. This would make the room look so much more bright beautiful. Great for classroom management! Why didn't I think of this?
ReplyDeleteI will use these through out the room in sets of two for buddy reading spots. So clever!!
ReplyDeleteI am starting to officially teach the 2 yr old class and in the older classes they sit in a circle on their names. since mine are not recognizing their names yet, I will use these spots for them to know where to sit at circle time
ReplyDeleteI have to move my kids every time we sit, too close, too far. I would love these to help with management.
ReplyDeleteI love the math and PA ideas for these!
ReplyDeleteI never would have thought to use Sit Spots for phonemic awareness. What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea for segmenting and blending words as well as for practicing math facts
