Roll A Sight Word

For the past four years, I have used Daily 5 as part of my literacy system. It is always challenging for kindergartners because five year olds usually do not have a lot of "skills" under their belt yet.
 My Daily 5 Pocket Chart

The pocket chart shows which options are available to my students during Daily 5.  We currently have 2 rounds of Daily 5 which last about 20 minutes.  Students complete Independent Reading first thing in the morning.

One of the options that I use during Word Work is Roll A Sight Word.   

Roll A Sight Word

Who doesn't love dice?

During this activity students can practice their sight words by rolling the dice and writing the sight word based on their roll. I like that I can accommodate this activity based on our learning and/or student need.

Would you like your own copy?  I have left it as a PowerPoint document so that you may change the words to fit the needs of your students.

    Thank you for sharing this. I am always looking for new things to add to my word work rotation. I noticed that you mentioned lite brite. A para at my school mentioned an autistic student that loves the lite brite but she was running out of patterns. Do you make you own? Thanks! Liz

    My kinders were using the lite brite to build fine motor skills. Essentially many just liked to place the lites on and turn the light on. Silly, I know but many have never used it so they like it.

    I have used it in the past as a word work center. I cut out construction paper to fit and wrote the sight words on it. My former student who was autistic liked it. I made multiple copies of the words he knew so that he had lots of practice pages.

    Thanks for sharing this! I am going to use it 2 ways- keep the original for sight words and then change the top to read "Roll a Letter" and program it for letters the kids are struggling with!

    This is wonderful! I play a similar game with my students, but I have always just written sight words on little wooden blocks/cubes and they roll a word and write it on scrap paper. This is much cuter and now I can just use regular dice! I really appreciate you giving us the template so we can adapt it to the sight words we are studying and even differentiate it to use more difficult words for some students. Thank you!

      If they roll a 1 then they write the word that is listed in column 1, if they roll a 2 they write the word that is in row 2. They keep going until the fill up a column...at least that is how I would have my kiddos play it.

    Great idea and I love that you enabled us to change the words as needed! If it helps anyone...when I downloaded it I couldn't change anything. I opened it in power point and then hit "save as.." and saved it under a different name. Then I hit "duplicate slide" under edit and had no problems changing the sight words. Hope that helps!

    Just came across this. I think is great and can't wait to try it. I had an idea for using it to review word families. You could put the word feature into the text box and then when students rolled they add a word from that word family to the chart.
